New range, New 'DB' series Digital Linear actuators

Mclennan Servo Supplies Ltd. are introducing new range of miniature digital linear actuators that offer increased mechanical strength and performance with, in many cases, reduced overall size.

Smallest in the range with a diameter of just 26 mm is the 26DBM series that is available with a choice of magnet technology to optimise price and performance. When specified with the Neodymium magnets the 26DBM provides linear thrusts up to 28N and incremental step sizes down to 0.001 inches.

The 35DBM series offer similar performance previous types with an overall diameter of 36 mm, a reduction of 35% compared with the outgoing models. The most powerful of the new introductions is the 42DBL series that offer linear thrusts up to 100N from a 42 mm diameter package, resulting in a 14% increase in thrust and a 40% reduction in size compared with previous types.

The DB series digital linear actuators are stepper motors that incorporate an internal leadscrew to convert rotary to linear motion. The units are available as 4 phase unipolar or 2 phase bipolar types and offer a choice of stroke lengths from 13 to 260 mm and a choice of resolution from 0.025 to 0.05 mm per step.

The DB series linear actuators are ideal for use with digital control techniques in applications such as ball valve actuation, scientific medical and optical equipment and light duty industrial control and manipulation systems.

New product, BL70 Premotec's new motor with integrated drive

Precision Motor Technology B.V. (Premotec) based in The Netherlands, specialist in manufacturing small brushless DC motors with integrated drive electronics have chosen the Drives Exhibition @ the NEC for the World-wide launch of their latest BL70 brushless motor with integrated drive.

The BL70, Premotec's most powerful brushless motor yet, utilises an internal rotor construction that provides superior thermal dissipation characteristics and an increased dynamic capability.

Operating from a 24 Vdc supply, the BL 70 motor's integrated electronics provides variable speed control with up to 125 watts continuous output power. Speed is controlled by a 0-5 V control signal over a range of 100-3000RPM, while a synthesised electronic encoder signal that provides an output of 36 pulse per revolution is available as a digital monitor of motor speed and position.

The unit provides a compact solution to a variety of light industrial applications such as conveyor drives, paper feed and pump drives. Scientific applications include stirring equipment, peristaltic pumps, mixing machines, as well as any variable speed application that requires long maintenance free life.

The brushless construction, high grade bearings and internal drive of the standard motor provides a long life drive solution that greatly simplifies the use of the motor as well as reducing overall system cost.

The use of internal rotor technology offers the opportunity for rapid response compatible with servo operating characteristics when external electronics. Mclennan, the sole UK representatives and distributors for Premotec can offer motion control systems that provide full servo operating characteristics based on BL70 internal rotor motor technology.

Increased performance & reduced size MSE570

The 'MSE570 Evo 2' from Mclennan Servo Supplies utilises a new high efficiency bipolar output stage that provides increased efficiency. The use of the latest power device technology has enabled the design team to achieve a 35% increase in output power while reducing unit size and operating temperature.

The 'Evo 2' drive is a development of Mclennan's successful low cost MSE570 Eurocard drive module that is suitable for any 2 or 4 phase stepper motor with coil ratings from 0.5 to 5.5 Amps per phase. The advanced new power stage has dramatically reduced unit width, thereby enabling up to 12 units to be mounted in a single 19in. standard Eurorack, resulting in an improved rack density of 70%.

Power losses have been reduced by more than 200% greatly increasing system efficiency while the increase in drive voltage from 35 to 48 V results in significant increases in motor performance.

The MSE570 'Evo 2' provides the choice of full or half step drive for improved motor smoothness and resolution, has thermal protection and on-board diagnostics for increased reliability. Although designed for control from external clock and direction signals, additional up-grade features include the provision of an on-board voltage controlled oscillator circuit for operation off-line from the host control source.

Despite the improved performance, efficiency and packaging characteristics of the MSE570 'Evo 2', Mclennan has retained it's competitive pricing policy and is launching the 'Evo 2' at the same price as the outgoing model. Prices range from £130 for small quantities falling to less that £80 for the volume OEM user.

A range of motherboard options that provide solder-free connection to external control signals or Mclennan's own PM600 motion controller will appeal to the system integrator. Furthermore, detailed design work on the output stage has resulted in a unit with low electrical emissions so compliance with the EMC directive is achieved without expensive additional noise suppression circuitry.

A new level of "plug & run" simplicity for stepper motor drive users

The new SM9749 stepper motor drive module from Mclennan Servo Supplies Ltd provides a new level of "plug & run" simplicity for stepper motor drive users. The unit is an integrated cased module that connects directly to an AC supply and combines an advanced high efficiency drive and motion controller. The SM9749 is provided with a robust industrial motor connector and 'D' connectors for RS232, Digital I/O, over-travel limits to protect the driven mechanism & manual jog box inputs. Users can specify a wide range of cables to connect the motor, encoder, datum/limit & I/O inputs with optional lengths up to 10 meters. A choice of break-out terminal boxes are also available for use with motors equipped with flying leads or alternatively the user can specify motors equipped with connectors.

The Bipolar drive stage provides 400 step resolution and an output up to 3.5 Amps/phase with a 40V rail that automatically increases when high motor speeds are required. A range of matched motors from size 17 to NEMA size 34 are offered with the drive providing a choice of operating torque ratings up to 1.5Nm.

The integral motion controller enables the user to choose between open, or closed loop control when an encoder is used to monitor motor position. The controller provides programmable point-point positioning and features 16 optically isolated programmable digital I/O for integration with other machine functions.

The drive may be controlled by means of either RS232 or RS485 in real time from a PC with up to 99 controllers controllable from a single port. Alternatively an integral non-volatile memory enables complex motion sequences to be stored for operation off-line. These sequences can be easily programmed using Mclennan's simple to use Digiloop motion software and once down-loaded enables the SM9749 to perform pre-programmed moves, either as a stand-alone controller or integrated in a PLC based system. Because the unit uses standard Mclennan software it may be used alongside dc and AC brushless systems that utilise the same software.

The SM9749 design provides simplified installation. Up to 3 units can be fitted in a standard 3U high 19 in Eurorack. Alternatively a cradle is available for mounting to the base of a control cabinet.

The combination of competitive pricing that ranges between £800 for small quantities & £600 for the volume user, combined with the Plug & Run simplicity of operation makes the SM9749 an attractive solution for both system integrators and end users.
